Greece wants good neighbourly relations with North Macedonia, but selective alignment with international law won't be tolerated: minister

Athens, 30 August 2024 (MIA) – We champion good neighbourly relations, we support the European perspective of all Western Balkan countries, but in no way we will tolerate this kind of selective alignment with international law. International law is a package, you either accept it completely or you reject it completely and the same goes for Albania, said Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis referring to the relations with our country in an interview with Skai TV, MIA’s Athens correspondent reports.

Since coming to power, the new government in the neighbouring country and the president have been systematically violating the core of the Prespa Agreement, he said.

“The Prespa Agreement, whether we like it or not, is an international text, it cannot be amended unilaterally. The text of the agreement is very clear, it says everyone should use the name North Macedonia. It means at this moment, the neighbouring country is in a state of violating the Prespa Agreement,” stated Gerapetritis.

Asked whether Greece has been reacting, the minister said they have been informing all the countries at bilateral level as well as all international organizations.

“All necessary measures are taken. We are prepared for all probabilities if this situation with the government of North Macedonia resumes,” Gerapetritis stated stressing Greece has tools according to the international law “that would bound North Macedonia to align.”
