Greece confirms 6 cases of Mu variant; Delta still dominant
Athens, 2 September 2021 (MIA) — Greek health authorities have confirmed six cases of the new coronavirus strain called Mu, also known as B.1.621, which was first identified in Colombia in January and the World Health Organization said it was monitoring, MIA's Athens correspondent reports.
Of the six cases of the Mu variant, according to health authorities, four were imported. Of them, two were detected in Argolis and the Athens airport, and one each in central Athens and Achaea.
Mu has been detected in countries in South America and Europe. In its weekly Covid-19 report, the WHO said there were indications Mu's mutations enable it to evade antibodies in vaccinated or recovered people even better than other variants.
But it said more studies were needed on the variant to prove it is more contagious or more resistant to vaccines.
Of the newly confirmed Covid-19 variants in Greece, Delta is dominant with 899 new cases, or 96.7 percent of the identified strains in the country in the past week.
Regarding the new daily cases of Covid-19, Greece's National Public Health Organization on Thursday reported 2,840 new cases, 33 deaths, and 362 patients on ventilators in intensive care units. mr/
