Gov't forwards to Parliament ratifications of protocols for Sweden and Finland's NATO accession
Skopje, 17 July 2022 (MIA) - The government has forwarded to Parliament the bills on the ratification of the Protocols to the North Atlantic Treaty regarding the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO allowing for legal preconditions to be created for the protocols to enter into force before the two countries join NATO. Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski and the whole government have openly supported the initiative of Sweden and Finland to join NATO endorsing their accession bid back in May. "The Protocols to the North Atlantic Treaty regarding the accession of Sweden and Finland were signed in Brussels on July 5, 2022 by officials of the NATO member states," the government said Sunday. The Republic of North Macedonia, said the press release, fully supports the NATO open door policy including the accession of the Kingdom of Sweden and the Republic of Finland into the Alliance and considers it a key step and contribution to strengthening the security and stability in Europe bearing in mind the unjustified Russia's military attack against Ukraine. "Sweden and Finland have developed a high-level cooperation with NATO and their membership will strengthen the political power of the Alliance and the Alliance by admitting them is demonstrating unity," stated the press release.
