Gjorgjievski announces plans for Skopje Aqueduct, Skupi, Old Bazaar, Kale

Skopje, 11 October 2025 (MIA) — VMRO-DPMNE's candidate for Skopje mayor, Orce Gjorgjievski, presented his cultural strategy for Skopje at a press conference earlier Saturday.

Gjorgjievski's plans include revitalizing public spaces, developing cultural infrastructure and providing support for cultural development.

"Skopje is a city that tells its history through Skupi, the Bazaar, the Kale and the Aqueduct. These are the symbols of the city's historical and social continuity. But we have to admit, these places have been neglected for years," he said.

Gjorgjievski said the neglect of cultural heritage needed to stop. He said cultural heritage should become a source of pride, energy and new life.

"We will transform the Aqueduct into a modern cultural park, with concert stages for events and festivals, with landscaping and walking trails. We will also build the longest mural wall in Southeastern Europe, as a symbol of contemporary art and the energy of youth," he said.

He announced the Skupi archaeological site would be fully reopened. "The plan for cultural activation of the space includes theater plays and other performances, artistic and archaeological residencies and festivals," he said.

According to Gjorgjievski, the Old Bazaar's historical buildings will be integrated into everyday urban life as repurposed spaces for cultural centers, markets or art workshops within a vibrant historical district attracting both foreign and domestic visitors.

Skopje's Kale fortress, too, will be opened for festivals, concerts, theater performances, educational activities and exhibitions, he said, to make it accessible and attractive for all generations.

VMRO-DPMNE's mayoral candidate also announced improving the work of the MKC Youth Cultural Center, the Cultural and Information Center, the Museum of the City of Skopje and all cultural institutions under the authority of the City of Skopje.

He also said the Millennium movie theater would be completely renovated and reopened as a multifunctional cultural venue. mr/
