Germany's Scholz: It's time Western Balkans settled internal conflicts
Berlin, 3 November 2022 (MIA) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that all Western Balkan countries are part of the free and democratic Europe and that it is the shared job of the European Union and the region to turn the promised European future into reality. Speaking at Thursday's opening of the Berlin Process Summit in Berlin, Scholz said the forum offers opportunities for talks on the myriad of challenges the Western Balkans is facing. The Berlin Process, he stressed, can not only free the potential of the region, it can also accelerate its path towards EU integration. The German leader called the region to settle internal conflicts amid Russia's brutal war against Ukraine. Scholz said today's summit of Western Balkan leaders and EU officials will discuss three agreements considered crucial for building and integrating the common regional market. According to him, it is important to facilitate contacts in the region in the broadest sense and to build an integrated future without internal borders. Energy security will be a key issue, he added recalling it was discussed by energy ministers at a October 24 meeting of the Berlin Process. As part of the Berlin Process format, interior ministers on October 20 also discussed illegal migration and human trafficking, deemed one of the important issues. Saying that promises are given to the Western Balkans with a sense of urgency today, Chancellor Scholz vowed that the citizens in the region can count on Germany and the Berlin Process.
