German gas sites could be filled to over 100%, expert says
Berlin, 12 November 2022 (dpa/MIA) - Although Germany's gas storage facilities are already almost 100% full, storage association Ines says there is an opportunity to store slightly more before the weather gets colder. "Under optimal conditions, it is quite possible for gas storage facilities to reach a fill level of more than 100%," said the managing director of the Initiative Energien Speichern (Ines), Sebastian Bleschke. The temperature, the calorific value or even the pressure of the upstream gas network were factors that influenced how much gas could be stored. However, he cautioned against waiting too long before adding extra gas to the storage sites. "Falling temperatures and the associated increase in gas consumption will deprive the market of the opportunity to continue storing gas," Bleschke told dpa. There are already storage facilities whose current fill level exceeds the designated working gas volume.
