German police carry away Greta Thunberg at lignite mine protest

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was among the demonstrators carried away by police from the edge of the Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine in western Germany on Tuesday, according to a dpa photographer on site.

Police confirmed that Thunberg was part of the group that moved towards the edge of the mine and was then stopped and carried away.

The open pit has a steep edge and it is dangerous and forbidden to be there. A dpa photographer observed that Thunberg was carried away by three policemen and set down after some 50 metres to undergo a check of her details.

Earlier, 60 to 70 activists sat down for a protest action near the edge of the open-cast mine. The action was part of a number of protests on Tuesday against the expansion of the mine.
