German Defence Minister Pistorius in Kiev for military aid talks

German Defence Minister Pistorius in Kiev for military aid talks

Kiev, 12 June 2025 (dpa/MIA) - German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Kiev on Thursday, saying he wants to speak with Ukrainian leaders about the ongoing conflict in the country and discuss additional military aid.

Speaking shortly after his arrival, Pistorius condemned recent Russian airstrikes on Ukraine, which involved a large number of cruise missiles and drone strikes, describing them as extremely violent and threatening.

According to Pistorius, the pattern of strikes signals that Moscow currently has no interest in a peaceful resolution and is instead continuing its campaign with unrelenting force, increasingly targeting civilian areas.

The defence minister said his visit underscored the commitment of Germany's new government to support Ukraine.

Earlier this week, Ukraine reported the largest Russian drone attack since the start of the war over three years ago, involving 479 Shahed drones along with several cruise and hypersonic missiles.

Pistorius, together with his British counterpart John Healey, has taken a leading role in military aid for Ukraine as support from the United States under President Donald Trump remains uncertain.

At a recent meeting in Brussels, Pistorius pushed for stronger international efforts to strengthen Ukraine's air defences.

He emphasized the growing importance of electromagnetic warfare, including securing Ukrainian communications, gathering intelligence, disrupting Russian signals, and defending against drone attacks.

Germany is the second-largest provider of military aid to Ukraine after the US.
