Georgievska: We'll use all of Parliament’s mechanisms to elect constitutional judges
Skopje, 20 September 2022 (MIA) – The irresponsible and reckless behavior of VMRO-DPMNE’s MPs is harming the country’s judiciary. The Constitutional Court is operating with a minimal quorum, with five out of a total of nine constitutional judges. The term of one more judge will end in November. The country may enter a constitutional crisis until new judges are appointed since the Court will be unable to adopt decisions or hold sessions, said Marija Georgievska, SDSM MP and chair of the Parliament Committee on Election and Appointment Issues, at a press conference Tuesday. “For days now the VMRO-DPMNE MPs in the Committee have been trying to block the appointment of new constitutional judges in every possible way. This is typical of VMRO-DPMNE, whenever important decisions for the judiciary are being made, they obstruct, block and threaten. That was the case with the appointment of the state public prosecutor, and is also the case now when we have to appoint new constitutional judges,” said Georgievska. For more than a week, said Georgievska, “nervous and vulgar behavior can be seen in the MPs seeking to prolong the appointment of new constitutional judges at any cost.” The lawmaker of the ruling party pledged that they will use all of Parliament’s mechanisms to ensure new constitutional judges are elected and assured it will be done. “We will use all of Parliament’s mechanisms, the constitutional judges will be elected, and the Constitutional Court will operate at full capacity. VMRO-DPMNE will once more suffer defeat at the hands of justice,” said Georgievska, adding that she will try to persuade her colleagues to participate in a rational debate. According to her, all MPs should show seriousness and responsibility, while leaving politics aside. ad/ba/
