Georgi M. Unkovski's 'DJ Ahmet' wins 6 awards at 3 festivals this weekend

Skopje, 17 November 2025 (MIA) — "DJ Ahmet" (2025), Georgi M. Unkovski's debut feature film, won six awards at three European film festivals over the weekend, the Film Agency said in a press release.

"Since its premiere, 'DJ Ahmet' has consistently received great acclaim from the audience, with viewers enthusiastically saying the film surprised, moved and delighted them," the release said.

The film has received similarly enthusiastic approval at international festivals, it said.

At the Bosphorus Film Festival, the film won the Special Jury Prize and the Best Actor Award for Arif Jakup in the role of DJ Ahmet.

Jakup also won the Best Actor award at the Seville European Film Festival, where the film won the Grand Jury Prize, as well.

At the Braunschweig International Film Festival, the film won the Jury Award for the Best European Debut or Second Feature Film (Volkswagen Financial Services Film Prize) and the Audience Award for the Best European Debut or Second Feature Film (Der Heinrich).

"What makes me especially happy is that this kind of success is no longer the exception but a trend. The new generation of Macedonian directors is making bold, contemporary and deeply personal movies that resonate with audiences from different cultures," Film Agency director Sashko Micevski is quoted as saying in the release.

"‘DJ Ahmet’ is proof that our authors are not only keeping up with European trends – they are setting them. This team has shown that talent, when supported and encouraged, can shift the entire regional and European cinema landscape," Micevski noted.

The "DJ Ahmet" crew said the recent awards were an incredible recognition for the entire team, especially for Jakup and Unkovski. "Macedonia has once again highlighted its talent on the world film map," they said.

The film was supported by several national and international institutions, including the Film Agency of North Macedonia, Eurimages, the Czech Film Center, the Film Center of Serbia and the Croatian Audiovisual Center. mr/
