Generated municipal waste in 2023 at 878,303 tonnes, 503 kg per person: statistics

Skopje, 22 April 2024 (MIA) - The total amount of generated municipal waste in North Macedonia in 2023 was 878,303 tonnes. The annual amount of generated municipal waste per person was 503 kg, an increase of 7.7 percent compared to 2022. Most of the collected municipal waste (99.8%) is disposed of in landfills, said the State Statistical Office on Monday.
The total amount of collected municipal waste in 2023 was 621,686 tonnes, up by 2.6 percent compared to 2022. This increase is due to the increased number of settlements included in the collective waste collection system.
The highest amount of collected municipal waste was registered in the Skopje Region - 169,515 tonnes or 27.3 percent of the total collected amount in the country. Of the total amount of collected municipal waste, 507,138 tonnes or 82 percent were collected from households, and the remaining 18 percent from legal and natural persons (commercial waste).
By waste type, the highest amount of collected waste is mixed municipal waste, 531,033 tonnes or 85.4 percent, and the lowest amount is rubber waste, 1,301 tonnes or 0.2 percent of the total amount of collected waste.
