Forest fires break out in Greece due to extreme drought

Forest fires break out in Greece due to extreme drought
More than 50 bush and forest fires broke out in Greece on Tuesday due to weeks of extreme drought and strong winds. The most dangerous fire raged in the Stamata-Dionysos region, about 20 kilometres north-east of Athens. "Houses were damaged. Many residents had to be brought to safety," the deputy governor of the region, Vasilis Kokkalis, told the Skai news channel. Firefighting planes and helicopters as well as numerous fire brigade task forces battled the flames, state television showed. The Greek Civil Defence warned on Tuesday of a high fire risk. Temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius were expected in all parts of the country in the coming days. The winds should also be strong.
