Skopje, 16 September 2023 (MIA) - The first glider of Macedonian aviation named "Ilindenka" is on display at the Stenkovec recreational airfield, which hosts an air show on occaion of the 100th anniversary of Macedonian aviation, namely the establishment of Aeroclub-Skopje in 1923.

"Ilindenka" was produced in the "20 May" plant in Skopje and made its first flight in 1955. It also took part at the world gliding championships in Poland in 1958 as part of the former Yugoslavia team.

"The glider was since displayed in the Military-Technical Museum in Belgrade and considering the excellent relations with the President and Foreign Minister of Serbia, as well as the Belgrade museum director, this glider is today in Skopje, where it rightfully belongs," said Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski in his address.

PM Kovachevski said "Ilindenka" opened the path to the series of such gliders that were distributed across former Yugoslavia and perceived as one of the best in the world.

He said that on the 100th anniversary of Macedonian aviation, the country can proudly say it is part of NATO, with EU being the next destination.

"We focus on creating a prosperous, economically strong and European North Macedonia. This is the only direction that ensures the prosperity of the country that is recognized as a credible partner in the transatlantic community, a partner in the creation and maintenance of global peace, a country with an internationally recognized Macedonian identity, language and culture," said Kovachevski.

The PM added that Macedonian aviation has gone through numerous challenges over the past century, including transformation of societies, conflicts and disasters.

"Nevertheless, its persistence and faith lead to the overcoming of these challenges while getting the due respect. The humble beginnings from 100 years ago represent a solid foundation for the success of Macedonian aviation, proven through the joint activities of our pilots in operations to save lives in the country and abroad," noted Kovachevski.

Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic and Italian Ambassador Andrea Silvestri are among the guests at today's air show.

The show includes over 30 various aircraft from the country and abroad, parachutists and friends of the Aeroclub from the entire region. Visitors enjoy acrobatic flying and flypasts, while parachutists fly the biggest national flag in the air. The programme also includes formation flights of the fire-fighting Air Tractors, military and police aircraft, along with a WizzAir passenger plane.
