Far-right leader Meloni gets mandate to form next Italian government
Rome, 21 October 2022 (dpa/MIA) - Far-right Italian politician Giorgia Meloni received a mandate to form the country's next government, the presidential palace announced on Friday. Meloni led her Brothers of Italy party to take the largest chunk of votes in elections last month and is now set to form a coalition that includes the right-wing League and centre-right Forza Italia. Meloni has already submitted a Cabinet list and she and her new Cabinet are set to be sworn in at 10 am (0800 GMT) on Saturday. She would then become Italy's first female prime minister. Speaking after a meeting with President Sergio Mattarella, Meloni said her government is ready to get started immediately. According to media reports, there has been bickering within the coalition about the assignment of ministerial seats since the election.
