Rome, 20 July 2024 (PA Media/dpa/MIA) — Former Spain star Cesc Fabregas will begin his managerial career at Como after he signed a four-year deal with the promoted Serie A club.
Ex-Arsenal captain Fabregas retired from playing after a season at the Italian outfit last year and subsequently took the role of Como Under-19 head coach.
Fabregas, who holds a minority share in the club, was promoted to first-team manager in November following the dismissal of Moreno Longo, but had to step down a month later due to not holding the necessary UEFA coaching badges.
It resulted in Osian Roberts taking over as interim head coach, with Fabregas made assistant, and the Welshman led Como back into Serie A - but the Spaniard can now take over managerial duties.
Roberts will now revert to his original role of head of development at Como.
Como director Mirwan Suwarso said: “It’s an honour for us to officially appoint Cesc as head coach. The impact of his knowledge, experience and passion is already evident in the success of last season and the evolution of our playing style.
“We believe that this is just the start though and look forward to continuing working with Cesc this season and for many years to come.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Osh for the brilliant job he did last season as he steps into the role of player and coach development and a key architect for the future success of our club.”
Fabregas, 37, will be tasked with leading Como in their first season back in Serie A since 2003.
He added: “I am so happy to be starting this season as head coach and I thank the ownership group for trusting me with this position.
“I share the ambitions of the group and believe this is just the start of where this club can go. It’s going to be a tough and important season but myself and the rest of the coaching staff are ready and we all believe.”
