European Commission to take new legal action against Poland
Brussels, 22 December 2021 (dpa/MIA) - The European Commission said on Wednesday it is going to take legal action against Poland due to "serious concerns with respect to the Polish Constitutional Tribunal."
European Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said recent judgements from the tribunal, the constitutional court of Poland, "breached the general principles" of EU law in a Brussels press conference announcing the decision.
The infringement proceedings could lead to another lawsuit at the European Court of Justice and eventually further financial sanctions against Poland.
Its the latest fallout between the top EU authority and Poland over the rule of law. Warsaw has two months to reply to the formal notice of legal action.
