European Affairs Minister Murtezani meets new French Ambassador Le Rigoleur

Skopje, 3 October 2024 (MIA) - Minister of European Affairs Orhan Murtezani met Thursday with new French Ambassador Christophe Le Rigoleur, discussing several aspects of bilateral cooperation, with focus on development projects, European integration, and support mechanisms for reform processes.

Minister Murtezani stressed that the country remains fully committed to EU membership and implementation of necessary reforms, especially for the rule of law, judicial sector reforms, fight against corruption and organized crime, "especially considering that according to the new methodology for accession negotiations, the progress of these reforms will dictate the dynamics of the entire negotiations process," the Ministry of European Affairs said in a press release.

Discussions reaffirmed France's strong support for North Macedonia's Euro-integration efforts, especially through bilateral cooperation programs and development projects. Murtezani pointed out that the French Development Agency (AFD), already present in the country, plays a key role in supporting priority investments within the Investment Framework and European Commission's Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which opens the path to new infrastructure and energy projects. Both sides expressed hope for strengthening bilateral development cooperation following the signing and ratification of the agreement between the Government and French Republic for establishing a French Development Agency, PROPARKO and Expertise France in the country. This agreement presents new opportunities for joint projects and additional technical support within the frameworks of national development projects.

Regarding technical support programs, Murtezani and Le Rigoleur agreed to continue cooperating through IPA instruments, such as TAIEX and twinning projects.

"Murtezani expressed gratitude for France's active support as a leading partner in several projects related to public administration reforms, strengthening of democracy, and protection of basic human rights. According to him, France's participation in the three ongoing twinning projects in North Macedonia is of key importance, demonstrating its expertise and commitment to successful implementation of reforms.

Interlocutors also discussed the inclusion of North Macedonia as part of France's geographical priorities within its Eurasia 2020-2024 Regional Strategy that focuses on resilience and urban adaption, energy transition support, and creating sustainable and inclusive economic and political models. ssh/ik/
