EU support for Ohrid’s green agenda
Ohrid, 17 December 2021 (MIA) – Ohrid Mayor Kiril Pecakov met Friday with EU Ambassador David Geer to tour former military barracks, where the EU-funded Ohrid Go project should be implemented. Ohrid Go, said the mayor, is very important to us as well as the support from EU funds to implement projects prepared by the municipality. “In the coming period we will work hard because the country uses very little financing from these funds. Because they are within reach, it’s our job to apply with project so as to make improvements, be it in infrastructure, better conditions for young people, more sports, raising awareness about the environment, etc,” said Pecakov. Ambassador Geer said he discussed several issues with the new mayor, including the UNESCO status of Lake Ohrid, saying that it must be preserved. Geer said that talks also included other priorities, such as good communal services in Ohrid, the green agenda, environment protection and how young people can develop skills. He announced support for the Innovation Center in Ohrid, considered by the EU as important resources for young people to show their innovations and creativity. The future smart innovation hub will be located in one of the six industrial architecture buildings at the outskirts of Ohrid, the former army barracks, as part of the efforts to regenerate the area to boost the local economy by attracting visitors, innovative businesses and young people. Earlier, Ambassador Geer, who was joined by Deputy Ambassador Julian, visited of Kichevo, as part of their tour of the South-West Planning Region. They met with Mayor Fatmir Dehari and Health Minister Venko Filipche to visit the General Hospital, where a computed tomography (CT) scanner was supplied by the European Union. St. Erazmo Hospital in Ohrid was the next stop where Ambassador Geer, Minister Filipche and Dutch Ambassador Dirk Jan Kop handed over the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device supplied by the European Union.
