EU fails to seal deal on new Russian sanctions; talks restart Friday

European Union countries on Thursday once again failed to agree on the 10th package of sanctions against Russia, diplomatic sources told dpa.

There was agreement on all but one detail, they said. The aim had been to reach a consensus by Thursday.

Representatives of the 27 EU countries were due to restart talks on Friday, the sources said, the day that marks one year since Russia unleashed its all-out assault on Ukraine.

The package, proposed by the European Commission and negotiated throughout the week, is expected to contain EU export bans on industrial goods and critical technology worth €11 billion ($11.7 billion) and controls on around 50 new electronic components used in Russian weapon systems.

According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, they will particularly affect exports of industrial goods that Russian industry cannot obtain from countries such as China.

These include machine parts, antennas, cranes, special vehicles and spare parts for trucks and engines.
