EU Commissioner Kos in Sofia for talks with top state officials

Brussels, 17 April 2025 (MIA) – EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos is paying a visit to Sofia where she will meet the country’s top officials and attend the “EU Meets the Balkans Forum”.

Kos will meet with Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev, the European Commission said.

In an interview with ENR, consisted of multiple news agencies, including MIA, Kos confirmed she will visit Sofia where she will also discuss with her hosts ways to unblock the country’s EU accession process, MIA’s Brussels correspondent reports.

The Commission, she told ENR, has been working on helping North Macedonia start negotiations by opening clusters, adding she has been personally engaged over the bilateral issues between Skopje and Sofia. After meeting with the Bulgarian politicians, Kos said she would contact the leaders in Skopje.

The “EU Meets the Balkans Forum” forum will bring together ministers and senior political representatives from the Western Balkans and neighbouring EU Member States, as well as think-tanks and private sector leaders. The agenda will centre on advancing alignment, integration, and connectivity between the EU and the region. Commissioner Kos will deliver a keynote address at the opening of the forum, said the Commission in the press release.
