EU Commission wants to suspend flights from southern Africa
Brussels, 26 November 2021 (dpa/MIA) — The European Commission has proposed that member states activate an "emergency brake" in their shared coronavirus travel rules to stop all air travel from southern African countries.
This ban should remain in place "until we have a clear understanding about the danger posed by this new variant [B.1.1.529]," the EU executive branch's president, Ursula von der Leyen, said in a press release.
In addition, travelers coming back from the region should be subject to strict quarantine rules, the statement continued.
"It is now important that all of us in Europe act very swiftly, decisively and united," von der Leyen said.
