EU chief von der Leyen votes at home polling station near Hanover

Berlin, 9 June 2024 (dpa/MIA) — EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen cast her vote for the European Parliament elections at a voting location near her home in Lower Saxony on Sunday morning.

Shortly after 10 am (0800 GMT), the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) politician arrived with her husband Heiko at the small polling station in Burgdorf-Beinhorn in the Hanover region.

Von der Leyen greeted poll workers with a friendly "Good morning," but refrained from making a statement or answering any questions from journalists.

After casting her vote, she smiled briefly into the cameras for photos and left the polling station after a few minutes. The 65-year-old von der Leyen is hoping to keep the top job for a second term as president of the European Commission.
