EU authority reports 134 salmonella cases linked to chicken meat

Brussels, 30 August 2023 (dpa/MIA) - European public health officials have recorded a total of at least 134 cases of salmonella which they believe are connected to infected chicken meat.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said in Stockholm on Wednesday that salmonella cases have been found in 10 EU countries and Norway. In Austria, one person died.
Most of the cases were reported between January and August 2023.
Interviews with patients in Austria and Denmark indicated that the salmonella infections could be linked to the consumption of chicken meat.
Two weeks ago the Austrian health authority raised concerns about a possible connection between salmonella illnesses and chicken kebabs from Poland. According to the agency, almost all those who had fallen ill in Austria had eaten chicken kebabs shortly before. Further investigations revealed that all the affected restaurants used kebab skewers imported from Poland.
