Escobar confirms he’ll leave post of US envoy for Western Balkans at month’s end

Washington, 8 May 2024 (MIA) - The United States Special Representative to the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, said Wednesday he believes Montenegro will be the next EU member state. In an online press briefing Escobar said several Western Balkan countries are firmly on the path of Euro-Atlantic integrations

“This especially applies to NATO members Albania, North Macedonia and Montenegro, who are fully engaged in the overall process of EU accession,” Escobar said.

During the online briefing, Escobar, whose term ends at the end of the month, said he regrets that the agreement for normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia wasn’t implemented during his term.

He said both countries are to blame for not fulfilling the tasks from the agreement and the annex for its implementation.

The Special Representative confirmed that he would leave his post at the end of the month, when his three-year term is set to end.
