Enforcing entry measures due to Delta variant is a possibility, says Health Minister Filipche
Skopje, 7 July 2021 (MIA) – Minister of Health Venko Filipche said on Wednesday that due to the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus in North Macedonia, there’s a possibility of enforcing entry rules at border crossings.
He added that stakeholders are not considering changing other protocols.
“There are talks of possibly making PCR tests, vaccination certificates or proof that travelers have previously had COVID-19 mandatory. However, we have to monitor the situation in the region and enforce coordinated measures,” Filipche told reporters following a meeting with Aleksandar Dimovski from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology within the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU).
Moreover, the Minister said that if enforced, measures will apply for all arrivals, including Macedonian nationals.
The Commission for Infectious Diseases, Filipche added, is set to discuss by the end of the week whether the epidemiological situation requires enforcing restrictions.
According to him, the new variant is expected to spread more rapidly, but if enough citizens are vaccinated and the country has achieved herd immunity, North Macedonia won’t register as many cases as it did with the spread of the British variant.
Minister Filipche underlined that the COVID-19 situation in North Macedonia remains stable and called on citizens to get vaccinated, adding that walk-in vaccination will be available as of Monday.
