EC President von der Leyen to visit North Macedonia on Tuesday
Skopje, 27 September 2021 (MIA) – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to pay a visit to North Macedonia on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Zoran Zaev will welcome von der Leyen in front of the government building.
According to the agenda, the two delegations will then head to an event at the Youth Cultural Center, where the Prime Minister and the European Commission President are also set to hold a press conference.
European Commission Spokesperson Eric Mamer confirmed on Friday that EC President Ursula von der Leyen would discuss the Bulgaria dispute during her visit to Skopje next week, MIA reported from Brussels.
Mamer did not provide further details, saying all questions would be answered during the press conferences that will take place during the EC President’s visit to the region on September 28-30, starting with Albania and North Macedonia.
“The President is going to the Western Balkans to re-ascertain EU’s commitment to the region. These are partners of the European Union, with whom we have very strong links and of course, the visits will be an opportunity to discuss these relations and the topical questions that exist, including in relation to this bilateral issue,” said Mamer when quizzed on the Macedonian-Bulgarian dispute.
Von der Leyen will visit the six regional countries ahead of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Slovenia slated for October 6.
The EU has insisted that the summit would not be an “enlargement summit” but an opportunity to discuss relations of the Union with the region.
