Earthquake puts people on Greek island of Santorini on edge

Athens, 2 February 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The popular Greek holiday island of Santorini has been shaken by a series of earthquakes in recent days, prompting the authorities to close the schools on Monday.

The residents of the volcanic island have been urged not to stay in coastal areas where there is a risk of landslides.

A statement from the city council of Santorini further stated that all events in enclosed spaces must be cancelled.

So far, no major damage has been reported.

According to the seismological institute of the northern Greek port city of Thessaloniki, most of the earthquakes occurred beneath the seabed between the islands of Santorini and Amorgos.

The magnitude of the tremors ranged between 3 and 4.5, with an upward tendency, meaning no all-clear can be given, the seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos stated: "With increasing magnitude, the earthquake risk also rises."

Around Santorini, there is not only the spectacular crater of the island's volcano, but also other volcanoes beneath the sea surface and several tectonic plates. These movements can cause strong earthquakes.

In 1956, earthquakes with magnitudes of 7, 7 and 7.2, followed by tsunamis, caused numerous fatalities and severe damage in the region.
