Democratic Union to continue discussions for a joint participation with VMRO-DPMNE

Skopje, 23 March 2024 (MIA) - The Central Council of the Democratic Union has decided on Saturday to authorize party’s leader Pavle Trajanov to continue discussions for a joint participation in the upcoming parliamentary elections with VMRO-DPMNE, Democratic Union said.

As announced during today's press conference where he unveiled the Democratic Union’s priorities, Trajanov affirmed that their programmatic goals align with those of VMRO-DPMNE. However, he noted that there are some unresolved issues where they have differences.

The reasons they decided to change the coalition, among other things, as he stated, are because they assessed that Macedonia is moving in the wrong direction. He pointed out the coalition on non-principled grounds and contrary to the basic principle of appropriate and fair representation of all ethnic communities, the agreement for one electoral unit - a law blocked by DUI and SDSM, as well as the legislative proposal for combating serious forms of organized crime.

"There were also other strategic, let's say, disagreements. Of course, one of our conditions was not to accept the French proposal as it was because it put Macedonia in a subordinate position, and there could still be demands and blackmail from Bulgaria, and we believe that this issue should be resolved differently,” Trajanov said.

When asked about the number of parliamentary seats they anticipate, he responded that they are in discussions with VMRO-DPMNE on the matter.

Today, the Democratic Union presented its priorities, which serve as the foundation for discussions with other parties. These priorities include a new Constitution, fundamental reforms of the judiciary, systemic changes in combating crime, a special program for youth, a free-market economy, free education, and media freedom.
