Death toll rises to 820 in Morocco's powerful quake

Cairo, 9 September 2023 (dpa/MIA) - The death toll in the powerful earthquake that struck Morocco has risen to 820 people, Moroccan state news agency MAP reports, citing the Interior Ministry.

Some 672 others were injured, including 205 sustaining serious wounds in the quake that rocked several parts of the North African country, it adds.

The fatalities include 349 in the province of Al Haouz and 271 in the province of Taroudant, according to the report.

The magnitude-6.8 earthquake rocked Morocco at 11 pm on Friday (2200 GMT), the US Geological Survey said.

It occurred around 70 kilometres southwest of the Moroccan city of Marrakesh at a depth of 18.5 kilometres, according to USGS.

Countries have responded with condolences and offers of support.
