Jakarta, 31 May 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The death toll from a landslide at a limestone quarry in Indonesia's West Java province rose to 14 on Saturday, as emergency teams continued to search for at least 11 workers who remain missing beneath the rubble, police said.
The landslide took place early Friday morning at a stone quarry in the Cirebon district, roughly 200 km east of Jakarta.
The Gunung Kuda mining site was active when a portion of the hillside collapsed, burying heavy machinery, trucks and dozens of workers.
"Eleven individuals still missing were reported by their families and colleagues, who confirmed they were working at the site when the incident occurred," said Dedi Setiawan, the West Java police chief.
"Locating them remains the top priority for our formal search and rescue teams."
Operations were temporarily suspended at sunset on Friday and resumed at first light on Saturday.
The joint rescue effort includes personnel from the national search and rescue agency, the police, the military, local disaster officials and volunteers.
At least three excavators and six trucks are believed to be buried under the landslide, complicating access to deeper layers of debris.
Landslides are a recurring hazard in Indonesia, particularly during the rainy season.
Quarry operations like the one at Gunung Kuda are widespread across West Java, supplying materials to the construction sector but often operating with minimal oversight.
