Czech Republic coach resigns after Euro 2024 qualification

Prague, 22 November 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Czech Republic coach Jaroslav Silhavy has resigned with immediate effect after leading his team to the Euro 2024 finals.

A 3-0 home victory against rivals Moldova on Monday saw the Czechs qualify directly for next year's tournament in Germany.

"Even though we are happy now, we had already decided before the game not to continue," Silhavy was quoted in a federation statement as telling Czech TV on behalf of himself and his staff.

"The pressure was already enormous, sometimes I didn't even understand it. This also contributed to our decision.

"I am convinced that we have done our job and we are leaving good results behind."

Silhavy had been on the job since 2018 and his contract was until the end of November.

Silhavy's team the quater-finals of the last Euros in 2021 but failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, and Euro 2024 qualification was only achieved on the final matchday.

On the weekend, he kicked three players out of the squad for violating team rules by visiting a night club.
