Moscow, 3 August 2022 (dpa/MIA) - Fighting has flared up again between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, with deaths and injuries reported on Wednesday. The Azerbaijani army said it had captured several mountain ranges in the region and that Armenian fighters had been killed. Armenia said Azerbaijan had violated a ceasefire agreement in force since the end of 2020, when the last war ended. Armenian officials acknowledged one person had died and eight had been injured in a drone strike. Meanwhile Azerbaijan also said a soldier had been killed after being shot at from the area where Russian peacekeepers are stationed to monitor the ceasefire. The Russian Defence Ministry accused Azerbaijan of breaking the ceasefire. The region of Nagorno-Karabakh, with its majority Armenian population, was annexed to Azerbaijan during the Soviet era. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Nagorno-Karabakh claimed independence from Baku as the Republic of Artsakh, backed by Yerevan. The war ended in 1994, with Armenia initially victorious, although the Republic of Artsakh was never internationally recognised. In 2020, Azerbaijan recaptured large parts of Nagorno-Karabakh in a further, brief conflict. Armenia was forced to make major territorial concessions in the ceasefire, including that Nagorno-Karabakh can only be reached from Armenia through a corridor monitored by Russian peacekeepers. That ceasefire has been broken several times since then.
