Cinematheque marks 70th anniversary of first Macedonian feature film ‘Frosina’
Skopje, 24 June 2022 (MIA) – The Cinematheque of North Macedonia marks the 70th anniversary of the first Macedonian feature film ‘Frosina’, filmed in 1952, directed by Vojislav Nanovic, and produced by the public film production company at the time, “Vardar Film”. ‘Frosina’ (1952) by Vojislav Nanovic and “A Quiet Summer” (1961) by Dimitrie Osmanli were digitally restored last year in the “Click Films” laboratory in Zagreb, Croatia. The film “A Quiet Summer” was also released on Blu-ray as the first Blu-ray edition of a Macedonian film. “The digitalization of Macedonian feature films is one of the fundamental activities of our institution, which is the only institution in the country whose work is to protect and safe-keep the national audiovisual heritage. The edition of the digitally restored version of ‘Frosina’ is currently being prepared for release – also on Blu-ray,” the Cinematheque said in a press release. The first Macedonian film saw its premiere on June 28, 1952, in the “Kultura” cinema in Skopje. It was shot in black-and-white on a 35mm film, with a runtime of 79 minutes. The genre of the film is a social drama on survival, the life of the migrant workers, the Second World War and the tragedy of a mother who loses her only son. The leading role is played by Meri Boshkova (Frosina), the other roles are played by Aco Jovanovski (Klime), Petar Veljanovski, Nagja Poderegin, Petre Prlichko, Ilija Djuvalekovski… The producer of the film is “Vardar Film”, the director of photography is Kiro Bilbilovski, the score is composed by Trajko Prokopiev, the scenography is by Milan Vasik, and the assistant director was Trajce Popov. The screenplay for the film was written by the writer Vlado Maleski, who later said he had no prior experience in writing screenplays, adding that to him, this was a direct entry into the craft of screenwriting. Under the initiative of the Cinematheque of North Macedonia, the Macedonian Radio Television has recently shot a documentary film about ‘Frosina’, which will premiere on MRT on June 28. The creators of the “70 Years Frosina” documentary are Sonja Samardjieva and Tomi Aleksov, and the editing is done by Vlatko Angelov. The film is in production at the Macedonian Radio Televion.
