Beijing, 8 April 2025 (dpa/MIA) - China on Tuesday vowed to stand firm in the face of US President Donald Trump's threatened additional tariffs on the country.
China had announced plans to impose a 34% tariff on US imports starting Thursday, in direct retaliation for a matching 34% duty on Chinese goods unveiled by the US president last week.
Trump used his Truth Social platform to give Beijing a Tuesday deadline to withdraw its retaliatory tariffs and warned that failure to comply would trigger fresh US duties starting Wednesday: "ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%."
However, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said it would "resolutely take countermeasures to protect its own rights and interests."
"China will fight till the end if the US side is bent on going down the wrong path," a statement from the ministry said.
There were "no winners" in a trade war, the ministry added.
Last week, the US government announced universal levies of a minimum of 10% on imports from almost all its trading partners - with increased tariffs for individual countries or trading blocs.
