China calls on UN Security Council for moderation in Ukraine war

New York, 25 September 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the UN Security Council to work harder towards peace negotiations in Ukraine.

"The pressing priority is to observe the three principles of no expansion of the battlefield, no escalation of fighting and no provocation by any party," Wang said at a high-level meeting of the body, which was also attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Wang also emphasised Beijing's neutrality. "China is not a creator of the Ukraine crisis, nor are we a party to it," he told the powerful UN body. "We continue engagement with all relevant parties, including Russia and Ukraine."

The more weapons sent to the battlefields, the more difficult it is to achieve a ceasefire, Wang said. China calls on the international community to work harder towards an early ceasefire and then lasting peace and security for the region, he said.
