Bulgarian hospital director: Eight injured in Kochani fire admitted to Pirogov in severe condition

Skopje, 17 March 2025 (MIA) — The eight people injured in the Kochani nightclub fire admitted to Sofia's Pirogov Emergency Hospital have severe burns on their arms and faces as well as injuries to their respiratory tracts from breathing toxic fumes, which may complicate their recovery, the hospital's director Valentin Dimitrov told a press conference Monday, BTA reported.

According to the Bulgarian news agency, the burn patients hospitalized at Pirogov include two girls and a boy who are under the age of 18. The other five — four men and one woman — are between 22 and 31.

Dimitrov said three of the patents had been intubated. The others were being monitored to determine their further treatment, he said, adding that upon their admission, all patients had been in severe thermal shock.

Thermal shock is caused by extreme temperature changes that can damage tissues and can be life-threatening.

The fire, which broke out Sunday around 2:30 am in a nightclub in Kochani, killed 59 and injured 155 people.

Bulgaria is treating 14 burn patients. Three of them have been admitted to the Military Hospital in Varna and three are hospitalized at St. George Hospital in Plovdiv. mr/
