Britain's Yee produces sensational finish for triathlon gold

Paris, 31 July 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Alex Yee produced a finish for the ages to give Britain men's triathlon gold at the Paris Olympics.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Yee seemed well beaten by New Zealand's Heyden Wilde on the concluding 10 km run, trailing by 12 seconds with less than 1.5 km left.

But Yee found another gear and almost sprinted past his rival to win by six seconds. Hosts France earned bronze from Leo Bergere, after Cassandra Beaugrand had earlier won the women's race.

Yee, who also has a mixed event gold from Tokyo, now has three Olympic medals like famous compatriot Jonathan Brownlee, who was part of the Tokyo team as well and has silver and bronze medals from the men's race.

Organizers had confirmed earlier that the races could go ahead as planned after the Seine was deemed clean enough to swim in. Water quality issues had led to the postponement of the men's race from Tuesday to later Wednesday.
