Bozhinovska – Joksimović: Accelerated construction of gas interconnector between North Macedonia and Serbia

Bozhinovska – Joksimović: Accelerated construction of gas interconnector between North Macedonia and Serbia

Skopje, 29 October 2025 (MIA) - The construction of the gas interconnector between North Macedonia and Serbia, a project of strategic importance for energy security and diversification of gas supply in the region, was in the focus of Wednesday’s meeting between Minister of Energy, Mining, and Mineral Resources, Sanja Bozhinovska, and Serbia’s Assistant Minister of Mining and Energy for International Cooperation and European Integration, Jovana Joksimović, held as part of the 14th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development (IFESD-14).

The two ministers agreed the project should be realized at an accelerated pace, in order to enable a connection of the gas systems of the two countries and access to new sources of gas, the Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Mineral Resources said.

“The gas interconnector with Serbia is one of the most important regional infrastructure projects that will enable real energy stability and security. This project is important not only for Macedonia and Serbia, but also for all of Europe. With this new energy connection, the two countries will get access to alternative sources and routes, while Europe will get a stronger and better-connected Balkans. This is a step that positions our country as an active and responsible partner on the new energy map of Europe. Our shared goal is for this project to be realized as soon as possible, since every day is valuable for our energy future. Through joint cooperation, we will realize this project in close coordination and constant communication with our partners in Serbia,” Bozhinovska said.

Joksimović said the two countries will work together to ensure the interconnector becomes reality as soon as possible.

“This is a part of the vision for a region that is energy-connected, secure, and aligned with European goals. Serbia and Macedonia together demonstrate that through partnership and a joint strategy, we can ensure a stable and predictable energy future. The cooperation between our two countries in the field of energy is an example of how regional partnership can deliver tangible results. The cooperation with colleague Bozhinovska and the Macedonian team is intensive and extremely constructive. I am confident that with joint coordination and support from our operators ‘Srbijagas’ and ‘Nomagas’, we will create a new energy axis of stability between the two countries. We have a clear timeline, completed studies, and support from European institutions. The next step is coordinated action for construction,” Joksimović said.

The Serbia–North Macedonia gas interconnector is intended to enable a bidirectional connection for the transport of natural gas between the two countries, providing access to new sources of supply.

Following the Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of the interconnector signed by both governments, a similar agreement was signed by the national operators “Srbijagas” and “Nomagas” to accelerate the project’s implementation.

The pipeline will span 70 kilometers, with 47 kilometers in Serbia and 23 in North Macedonia. On the Macedonian side, it will connect to the existing pipeline near Klechovce, and in Serbia to the pipeline in Vranje.
