Bojmacaliev: Security in Ohrid favorable, journalist's arrest to be investigated by Interior Ministry's internal control body

Ohrid, 8 April 2024 (MIA) – Security in the area under the jurisdiction of the Ohrid Internal Affairs Sector is favorable with detected drop in crime and fatal car accidents, Mitko Bojmacaliev, additional Deputy Interior Minister stated Monday during a visit to the Ohrid Internal Affairs Sector, the Lake Patrol Police and the St. Naum border crossing.

The ongoing campaign for the presidential and parliamentary elections was discussed at a meeting with top officials of the Ohrid Internal Affairs Sector, he said.

“So far, we’ve had excellent communication with all political parties and there have been no reports of disruption of the election process,” Bojmacaliev said vowing that the close communication with the police with the citizens and the parties will continue.

While in Ohrid, the additional deputy minister mentioned that the Interior Ministry in 2020 had procured six new boats with funds of the Ministry’s budget while some were donated by the Czech Republic. “It had solved yet another problem related to border patrols of Lake Ohrid,” said Bojmacaliev.

Asked to comment on yesterday’s arrest of the journalist Furkan Saliu, the additional deputy minister said he understood the public’s outrage all the while refraining from providing further details.

“At the moment, we have a minister from a political party that in the past had also arrested vocal journalists and had closed TV stations. The outrage is justified and I have nothing further to add than what had been included in the Interior Ministry’s press release,” Bojmacaliev said adding that the case will be investigated by the Interior Ministry’s internal control body.
