Blinken calls for tougher action against Russia enablers

New York, 25 September 2024 (dpa/MIA) - US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called for tougher action against those supporting Russia in its war in Ukraine.

"The quickest way forward is simply stop those who are enabling and fueling Putin's aggression," Blinken said during a high-level UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday held on the sidelines of the UN General Debate in New York.

Blinken called for a "just peace that upholds the principles of the United Nations Charter."

Specifically, the US top diplomat highlighted Russia's support for North Korea and Iran.

"The more Russia relies on their support, the more Iran and North Korea extract in return, and the more [Russian President Vladimir] Putin gives to Pyongyang and Tehran, the more he exacerbates threats to peace and security, not just in Europe, but in the Indo Pacific, in the Middle East, all around the globe, North Korea ramps up its military support for Russia," Blinken said.

The diplomat also mentioned China, which he said was helping Russia keep the war machine running.

Blinken reminded the Security Council of its central task: "seeking to peacefully resolve conflicts." He said the UN Charter was "crystal clear" in this regard. "We must seek a peace that upholds, rather than undermines the UN's core tenets."
