Blast at Afghan mosque during Friday prayers kills at least three
At least three people were killed and more than a dozen others wounded in an explosion inside a mosque in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar, officials said on Friday. The blast took place during Friday prayers in Spin Ghar district. A provincial tribal elder said a bomb was planted inside the mosque in the village of Terilay. He said the Taliban's district governor, who was among the wounded, was the main target. A health official who asked not to be named said at least three people died and another 13 people were taken to hospitals for treatment. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Nangarhar is among the most volatile provinces in the east of the country, where Islamic State militants have increased their activities since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August. The Taliban are enemies of the Islamic State. Both extremist groups have been fighting each other since Islamic State emerged in Afghanistan in early 2015. This is the third time Friday prayers were targeted in Afghanistan in the past two months. Previously Islamic State claimed attacks at Shiite mosques in Kandahar and Kunduz provinces that left at least a hundred civilians dead and injured dozens more.
