Washington, 23 October 2023 (dpa/MIA) - US President Joe Biden has held talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other leaders of allied countries on the Gaza war and reiterated support for Israel.

The leaders of the US, Canada, France, Germany, Britain and Italy reaffirmed their support for Israel in the joint statement.

The leaders "reiterated their support for Israel and its right to defend itself against terrorism and called for adherence to international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians," the White House said.

They welcomed the first shipments of humanitarian aid that reached the besieged Gaza Strip on the weekend. They pledged to continue coordination with partners in the region "ensure sustained and safe access to food, water, medical care, and other assistance required to meet humanitarian needs," the statement added.

They also wanted to continue diplomatic efforts with partners in the region to prevent the conflict from spreading and to work towards a political solution and lasting peace in the Middle East, the statement said.
