Belgrade: Students block public broadcaster, thousands gather in streets

Zagreb, 11 March 2025 (Hina/MIA) — Students have blocked the entrance to the Radio Television of Serbia building since Tuesday night in protest against the national public broadcaster's coverage of their demonstrations, which have been ongoing for over three months.

The protest was announced unexpectedly on social media shortly before it began. Students said the blockade would last for 22 hours and urged citizens to support them.

A large number of Belgrade residents have joined the students. The police has closed off traffic on two streets near RTS.

Students announced on Instagram that they would allow those inside the building to leave but would not permit anyone to enter until RTS was "freed" and started reporting objectively on the protests.

The Interior Ministry said police officers securing the RTS building, as before, would not intervene against those carrying out the blockade unless there was a violent intrusion into state institutions or the RTS building, or an attack on the police.

The ministry also mentioned that one member of the gendarmerie was injured when the police entered the RTS building.

In a show of solidarity with their colleagues in Belgrade, students from the University of Novi Sad gathered around midnight to block the headquarters of Radio Television of Vojvodina.

The wave of protests in Serbia was sparked by the deaths of 15 people killed in the collapse of a concrete canopy at Novi Sad's railway station on Nov. 1, 2024.

After an attack on students who were paying tribute to the victims during one protest, more than 60 faculties across the country's four public universities went into blockade.

In addition to daily 15-minute silent commemorations held across Serbia, several large protests have taken place in Novi Sad, Belgrade, Kragujevac and Niš.

The next major protest is scheduled for March 15 in Belgrade.
