Bayern outclassed by Barcelona in bitter reunion with coach Flick

Berlin, 24 October 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Bayern Munich were outclassed by Barcelona 4-1 in a bitter reunion with their former coach Hansi Flick in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Flick won the Champions League with Bayern in 2020 in a campaign that included a 8-2 thrashing of Barcelona.
Now, in charge of the Spanish team, his side was led to victory by a hat-trick from Raphinha, his first goal coming in the first minute as Barcelona had a ruthless start. Former Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski was also on target.
"Congratulations to the team. I'm happy because this is a very young team. I'm very proud," Flick told broadcasters DAZN.
Erling Haaland scored twice in Manchester City's 5-0 thrashing of Sparta Prague, while Liverpool made three wins in three games with a 1-0 triumph at RB Leipzig.
No chance for Bayern
Barcelona hadn't defeated Bayern since a 3-0 win in the Champions League semi-finals in 2015, but were ahead already in the first minute as Fermin Lopez's through ball found Raphinha, who drifted away from Bayern's last line of defence before dancing around goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and drilling the ball into the empty net.
Bayern were quick to regroup and thought they had the equalizer in the 10th after Harry Kane headed in Thomas Müller's cross. But VAR flagged Kane for offside and the goal didn't count.
It counted, however, just eight minutes later and in a very similar play. This time, Serge Gnabry made the cross and Kane completed it with a volley.
But the hosts retook the lead and thanks to former Bayern striker Lewandowski. Lopez chipped the ball past Neuer and wasn't able to regain possession, but the Pole raced to collect it and strike into the goal in the 36th.
Raphinha was again on target before the break and completed his hat-trick in the 56th as Bayern were completely dominated by Barcelona.
"A clear result. Bitter 4-1. The course of the game didn't look like a 4-1, but it was a deserved defeat," Joshua Kimmich said.
Neuer said the team "lack aggressiveness," while Bayern coach Vincent Kompany stressed they have to "learn from it and stick together."
Two times Haaland
Norwegian football star Haaland scored a brace with goals in the 58th and 68th - an unique and acrobatic volley - to help City in a 5-0 thrashing of Sparta Prague.
Phil Foden had broken the deadlock in the third minute, while John Stones in the 68th and Matheus Nunes from the spot in the 88th completed the victory.
"Makes it easier [to score first] because we've had a couple of games where we concede first. They were defending with a low block so it made it easier for us," Nunes told TNT Sports.
Liverpool and Aston Villa with perfect campaign
Liverpool and leaders Aston Villa are the only teams who have won all of their three games in the Champions League so far.
Villa, who earlier this month stunned Bayern with a 1-0 win, continued their perfect run with a 2-0 against Bologna on Tuesday.
Liverpool's winner was scored by Darwin Nunez in the 27th minute, immediately after Leipzig had a goal ruled out. The German side also had a goal disallowed in the 82nd.
Leverkusen drop first points
Bayer Leverkusen were unable to keep their perfect record in the Champions League as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Brest.
The Bundesliga champions took the lead in the 24th minute after Jonas Hofmann's perfect pass found Florian Wirtz on the edge of the box and the German midfielder slotted the ball into the net.
But Brest were level in the 39th after Pierre Lees-Melou equalized with a stunning volley.
"We were in control but their goal unsettled us. Then there was a phase in which we were unfocused and we lost the ball a few times. We have to learn from that for next time," coach Xabi Alonso said.
In the other early game, Atalanta and Celtic played out a goalless draw.
Elsewhere, Lille came from behind to defeat Atletico Madrid 3-1, Feyenoord won 3-1 at Benfica, Dinamo Zagreb defeated 10-man Red Bull Salzburg 2-0 and Inter Milan missed a penalty, but scored a goal in stoppage time to win 1-0 at Young Boys.
