Bayern defeat Celtic to take advantage in Champions League play-off
- Bayern Munich claimed a 2-1 win away at Celtic on Wednesday to take the advantage in the match-up in the Champions League last 16 play-offs.

Berlin, 13 February 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Bayern Munich claimed a 2-1 win away at Celtic on Wednesday to take the advantage in the match-up in the Champions League last 16 play-offs.
Michael Olise broke the deadlock for the Bundesliga team shortly before the break and Harry Kane added a second in the 49th minute. Daizen Maeda pulled one back for Celtic in the 79th but the hosts couldn't find an equalizer despite the late pressure.
Bayern's hopes of direct qualification essentially ended in a 3-0 defeat to Feyenoord, and the Dutch side hurt another European giant as they defeated AC Milan 1-0 thanks to Igor Paixão's third-minute goal.
Elsewhere, Vangelis Pavlidis scored the winner in Benfica's 1-0 victory against 10-man Monaco, who had Al Musrati sent off in the 52nd minute.
Bayern not intimidated by loud Celtic fans
Celtic fans are famous for being loud and passionate and many Bayern players expressed how excited they were to experience the atmosphere in Glasgow - but they were not intimidated by it.
The Germans had enjoyed most of the possession in the first half and were rewarded before the break with Olise's wonder strike.
He was found by a long pass from Dayot Upamecano and got rid of the defender before curling a beautiful shot into the net in the 45th.
Bayern quickly doubled their lead after half-time as Harry Kane volleyed in a Joshua Kimmich corner in the 49th.
The Celtic Park erupted in cheers when Maeda beat goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from close range in the 79th to throw the hosts a lifeline. But their late pressure - on the pitch and from the stands - didn't result in an equalizer.
"We are very happy with the result. Celtic have a fantastic record at home in Europe, so it's a difficult place to come. We were very much aware of that and are happy to get the win to take back to Munich," Bayern defender Eric Dier told UEFA.com.
Feyenoord make another victim
After stunning Bayern with a win and holding Manchester City to a 3-3 draw in the league phase, Feyernoord took down another European giant with a 1-0 win against Milan.
Goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther had just made a save to deny the Italians the opener and Paixão gave Feyenoord the advantage heading in Gijs Smal's assist in the third minute.
Paixão hit the woodwork in the 37th, missing the chance of a brace, but Feyenoord held on to their narrow lead.
Wellenreuther was hit twice in the head while challenging for the ball during the first half, but managed to stay on for the whole game and his heroics were also crucial for the victory.
"We can turn it around in the second leg. We have to learn from tonight. It’s not just the forwards – all the team needs to contribute to score goals" Milan defender Kyle Walker told Sky Sport.
In Monaco, the hosts fell behind in the 48th as Tomas Araujo through-ball found Pavlidis on the run, who chipped it over the goalkeeper from close range.
It didn't get easier for Monaco as Al Musrati was sent off in the 52nd after receiving a second yellow card.
Late drama in Belgium
Belgian champions Club Brugge scored from the spot in stoppage-time to defeat Europa League champions Atalanta 2-1.
It looked like the 1-1 would prevail, but Brugge were awarded a late penalty after Isak Hien fouled Gustaf Nilsson in the box. The forward himself was in charge of the spot-kick and secured the win for the hosts in the fourth minute of stoppage-time.
Brugge took the lead in the 15th through Ferran Jutglà's precise finish before Mario Pašalić equalized for Atalanta in the 41st.
On Tuesday, record champions Real Madrid claimed a dramatic 3-2 comeback win against Manchester City.
The new Champions League format made its debut this season and saw 36 teams playing in a league phase instead of a group stage. The top eight clubs advanced directly to the last 16, while teams placed ninth to 24th are taking part in an extra play-off stage.
Liverpool, Barcelona, Lille, Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal and Inter Milan are the clubs already qualified to the last 16.
The second legs are next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. A draw on February 21 will set up the ties for the knock-out stage.
