Azerbaijan declares end to military operation in Nagorno-Karabakh

Moscow, 20 September 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev declared the deployment of his troops against the Armenian-inhabited region of Nagorno-Karabakh over in a televised speech on Wednesday night.

Azerbaijan has restored its sovereignty over the area, he said from Baku.

There was initially no comment from the Armenian side.

About three years after the latest war between the two ex-Soviet republics, Azerbaijan launched a military operation to conquer the disputed South Caucasus region on Tuesday.

According to Armenians, more than 30 people died and more than 200 others were injured.

On Wednesday, both sides agreed to a Russian-brokered ceasefire, after which the fighting subsided. The Azerbaijani side agreed to the ceasefire under the condition that Armenian separatist fighters give up their resistance and lay down their arms.
