Australia's Morrison calls federal election for May 21
Sydney, 10 April 2022 (dpa/MIA) - Australians were set to head to the polls on May 21, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Sunday.
Morrison announced the date after informing Governor-General David Hurley at Government House in Canberra of his intention to dissolve parliament.
"He accepted my advice," Morrison said in a press conference.
Australians will vote for the House of Representatives and half the Senate.
Morrison is hoping to become the first incumbent prime minister to win two elections in a row since John Howard in 2004. According to Australian media, the opposition Labor Party has been ahead in the polls since June 2021.
Morrison first took on the role of prime minister 2018 after a back-room revolt against his predecessor, Malcolm Turnbull.
Nine months later, he saw his conservative coalition returned to power in a surprise election win that defied public opinion surveys and exit polls that had predicted victory for the centre-left Labor party.
