Apasiev: Levica won't support Albanian to be elected speaker

Skopje, 28 May 2024 (MIA) – Levica MPs will not support Alternativa’s Afrim Gashi to be elected as parliament speaker. The party leader Dimitar Apasiev said that the Levica MPs will not support an ethnic Albanian to be elected speaker.

Asked by reporters before the start of Tuesday’s constitutive Parliament session why Levica doesn’t want an ethnic Albanian to be parliament speaker, Apasiev said it is against the Constitution to be speaking a language different than Macedonian when presiding over sessions.

Apasiev said he expected the country to be “Kosovized” and he offered Mickoski “full support” to prevent it from happening.

“’Kosovized’ country is what is expected as you have voted. Our six MPs will offer support only an Albanian not to be elected speaker. We openly call on Mickoski, we offer full support only to prevent the Macedonian parliament not to be ‘Kosovized’ again,” said Apasiev.

A constitutive session for the election of the new parliament is taking place Tuesday, which is expected to last at least three days. Parliament will be constituted once a speaker is elected, for which Afrim Gashi of Alternativa, part of the Worth It coalition, is expected to be nominated.
