Analysis to be made with activities and measures to save Lake Prespa, says Kovachevski

Skopje, 20 January 2023 (MIA) – An analysis will have to be made in the coming period based on which activities and measures can be planned to save Lake Prespa, just as it was done in the past with Lake Ohrid, said Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski who is paying a visit to the Prespa region on Friday alongside Culture Minister Bisear Kostadinovska-Stojchevska.

The Prime Minister stressed it is a huge project that should be supported by partners, assuring that the country will not abandon Lake Prespa.

“The state will undertake everything within its competence and possibilities in relation to the disaster happening to Lake Prsepa. Lake Prespa is connected to Lake Ohrid and naturally, as a result of the climate changes, for example, there is less precipitation and the water level of lakes and rivers in the country has decreased, as in the whole of Europe, it happens that most of the lakes and rivers have reduced water levels. This issue has been discussed and in the coming period, an analysis will have to be made on the basis of which activities and measures can be planned to save the Lake Prespa, just as it was done in the past with Lake Ohrid,” said Kovachevski.

In response to a reporter’s question about the opening of the Markova Kula border crossing to Greece, Kovachevski said he believes it will be possible to talk about the opening of the border crossing as soon as possible.

“The activity of opening this border crossing took place a long time ago, and I need to discuss all the details about this with the Ministry of Interior and other competent institutions, as well as with the Greek side, because there are activities there that need to be completed. I believe that we will be able to talk about opening this border crossing as soon as possible, which was not the case in the past,” Kovachevski said.
