Ambassador tells UN Security Council: Israel will defend itself
- Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon has told the Security Council Israel has not ruled out further attacks on Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah.
New York, 21 September 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon has told the Security Council Israel has not ruled out further attacks on Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah.
"We will not allow Hezbollah to continue its provocations. The actions violate international law and Israel will defend itself," Danon told the powerful UN body in New York.
The ambassador said that since the October 7 deadly attacks mounted by the Palestinian militant organization Hamas, which triggered the war in Gaza, Hezbollah had fired more than 8,000 rockets at Israel.
Dozens of people have been killed and tens of thousands displaced, Danon said.
Since the war in the Gaza Strip began there have been almost daily military confrontations in the border area between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, which claims to be acting out of solidarity with Hamas. Deaths have been recorded on both sides - most of them members of Hezbollah.
Danon accused Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib of not even mentioning the name of Hezbollah in his address to the Security Council moments earlier.
"You have allowed a terrorist organization to create a state ... within your state bringing ruin to your own people. Instead of blaming us, your peaceful neighbours, you should take action now to restrain Hezbollah," the diplomat said.
"We know that the real problem is not Lebanon. The real problem is Hezbollah," Danon stressed as he offered to "sit with your help and achieve some kind of a compromise."
